Project Marcelo is a Non-Profit Organization that aims to raise awareness about Infantile Spasms and help children with debilitating, neurological disorders one mission at a time.
Learning about the complexities surrounding Marcelo’s condition was extremely difficult. It was an eye opening journey that placed us in a position to do remarkable things. Before Marcelo came into our lives, the thought of an “in-uteran” stroke never crossed our minds. We knew very little about seizures and absolutely nothing about Infantile Spasms. In fact, we did not know there were different types of seizures. Marcelo’s seizures were so subtle, at first we did not even realize that he was having them at all. To make matters even more confusing, we had no idea that Infantile Spasms could be more damaging to the brain than grand mal seizures or convulsions. According to the American Epilepsy Society, Infantile Spams is one of the “catastrophic childhood epilepsies” because of the difficulty in controlling seizures and the association with mental retardation.
Part of our mission at Project Marcelo is to help parents identify the seizures associated with Infantile Spasms also known as West Syndrome. The foundation also allows us the opportunity to shed light on the syndrome and help other children with neurological disorders. Project Marcelo has brought us a great sense of purpose and we look forward to making Marcelo’s life one that affects others as positively as it has ours.
Our decision to have Marcelo go through a Hemispherectomy was extremely difficult, but we knew it was his best chance to live a seizure free life. Friends, family, and even strangers from all walks of life united in prayers and donations to help Marcelo during his recovery. We are incredibly grateful for the support Project Marcelo has already received and look forward to making a difference!
